As lovely as it is to sidle up to that felt table and take on three of your toughest rivals in traditional Mahjong, Mahjong Solitaire online provides a quiet and meditative solo-player experience that can have you hooked for hours.

The difference between Mahjong and Mahjong Solitaire is similar to that between poker and solitaire. In Mahjong, multiple players draw and discard tiles from their hand (you can think of the tiles as cards) until one player achieves a winning hand. In Mahjong Solitaire, only one player matches and removes tiles to clear the entire table.

Like its older counterpart, online Mahjong Solitaire has become a staple beloved by both casual and hardcore gamers, as far back as the mid-80s, when the finest computer hardware included the likes of the IBM Personal Computer and Commodore Amiga, online solitaire games like Shanghai were selling more than 10 million copies.

Feeling late to the party? No worries. In this post, we’re bringing you a completely beginner-friendly breakdown of all things online Mahjong Solitaire. Whether you’re a classic Mahjong pro or you’ve never played either version, this guide will cover everything you need to know.

What Is Mahjong Solitaire?

Mahjong Solitaire is a tile-based game first created and popularized by the Chinese, after which it spread throughout other cultures, eventually achieving global recognition and acclaim.

While the origins of classic Mahjong are still debated (most sources say it was created in the mid-late 1800s), the online solitaire version appears to have first surfaced in 1981. After suffering an unfortunate injury that left him paralyzed, computer programmer Brodie Lockard discovered mahjong solitaire while in recovery and created a version of it on the PLATO computer system.

With continued advancements and interest in computer tech, Mahjong Solitaire saw several more iterations even before the advent of the Internet. Once the Internet arrived, Mahjong Solitaire went online, where thousands of people still enjoy free, browser-based, no-downloads-needed versions to this day.

How to Play Mahjong Solitaire

As mentioned, your primary objective in online Mahjong Solitaire is to fully clear the board by matching (and removing) sets of tiles from the board. But beware, even though this seemingly chilled-out alternative to competitive Mahjong is relaxing, you can still lose.

At the beginning of each game, the 144 Mahjong tiles will be set up in a predetermined shape, with all of the tiles facing up. The shape is often referred to as “turtle,” consisting of 8 horizontal rows of tiles (that differ in length to create a turtle shape).

As mentioned, some tiles are covered—the center of the turtle features several additional layers of tiles stacked on each other. Your job is to find and match pairs of free tiles to clear them from the board, with the aim of clearing the entire board

How to Match Tiles In Online Mahjong Solitaire

We mentioned the term “free” tile as a prerequisite for successfully matching a pair. There are two key conditions that must be met for a tile to be playable: at least one side (left or right) has to not be adjoined to a neighboring tile, and the tile cannot be covered (even partially) by another tile.

In addition to both of the tiles being free, they also have to be identical. Even if they are of the same suit—wan, circle, bamboo, wind, dragon, flower, or season—they will not match unless they are identical. In the same way that you can’t form a pair in poker with a 3 of clubs and a 9 of clubs, Mahjong requires an exact match. Check out this beginner-friendly guide to learn more about Mahjong tiles and suits.

If you don’t think ahead when matching tiles, you can whittle down the number of possible matches and end up with no more viable moves, ending the game. This is what gives Mahjong Solitaire an almost chess-like element when it comes to strategizing and planning.

How Does Scoring Work In Online Mahjong Solitaire?

You might be wondering, “Why does suit matter in this game?” Scoring may also seem frivolous in a game where every match would be worth the same amount (meaning every win would land you exactly the same amount of points).

MJ-hub_Scoring.webp

However, both of these issues are resolved in how online Mahjong Solitaire is scored. Each suit is worth a set amount of points. For example, each “wind” tile is worth 4 points, netting you a total of 8 points for matching a pair. However, scoring isn’t finished yet. These 8 points are then multiplied by a chain multiplier, which awards you based on how many pairs of the same suit you have matched in a row. That’s where the finesse comes into play.

Mahjong Solitaire Tips and Tricks

As long as you ensure that each match of identical tiles you make is intended to open up at least one more pair of matchable tiles, you should be able to clear the table before your time runs out. That said, plenty of nuances can affect your ability to do this effectively, in addition to more general tips that can keep this engaging puzzle game going for you.

  • Plan your moves: For most of the game, you will likely have more than one match available at any given time. Sometimes, it’s more fruitful to seek out a less obvious match before choosing tiles that are jumping out at you. Whichever pairing creates the most opportunities is the one you always want to choose.
  • Prioritize the higher levels and longer rows: The top and bottom horizontal rows and the higher piles of tiles arranged in the middle are the two best places to start making matches. As you work inwards on the rows and uncover tiles from the center, you will quickly open up many new matching opportunities across the table.
  • Rotate your selections: If you find yourself matching several pairs in a row from the same area, be careful. It’s helpful to rotate your matches so that you don’t end up preventing future matches by failing to free up tiles in more than one spot.
  • Take mental notes: Whether it’s a play for bonus points or simply a means to keep the matches flowing, take note for the future if you see a partially covered tile that matches a currently free tile. That way, when the covered tile opens up, you can save time looking around and quickly make that match. Do this for as many tiles as your short-term memory can handle.
  • Use the hint feature: In our version of online Mahjong Solitaire, there is no score or time penalty for using the hint button and no limit on how many times you can use it. Each time you click it, it will highlight one available match.
